Freshwater Under Threat - Vulnerability Assessment of Freshwater to Environment Change
UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment is responsible for the assessment of the world's water resources. In collaboration with partners, UN collaborators, NGOs, universities, governments, it carries out comprehensive assessments of world's freshwater and coastal/marine water resources in an integrated manner. Regional groups of researchers from key institutions in Africa and Asia carries out freshwater vulnerability assessments in selected river basins of their respective regions (Africa's - Southern, Eastern, Central, Western, and Northern Africa and the Western Indian Ocean island States and Asia's - North east, South east and South) by assessing major rivers/lakes/groundwater basins on the basis of natural and socio-economical management criteria. The assessment are aimed at providing the current environmental status of water ecosystems under their changing environment. At the end of the assessment their findings are analysed and documented in several publications.
