Economic Incentives for Sustainable Land and Water Management in South and Southeast Asia

2010-2013

The goal of this project is to examine opportunities for sharing some of the benefits generated through the development of hydropower facilities among residents of impacted watersheds, and also more broadly throughout a region or country. The project will examine the potential for implementing benefit-sharing mechanisms primarily in Laos and Vietnam and will also study opportunities and the experience gained to date, e.g. in Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal. While focusing primarily on opportunities to enhance livelihoods and reduce poverty, the project will also consider measures for promoting wiser management of land and water resources, with particular emphasis on lands with steep slopes. Planned outputs of the project include economic analysis of benefit-sharing mechanisms that might be implemented in countries with notable development of hydropower facilities and of livelihood activities in watersheds impacted by hydropower development.
